[GMS Receives First US Permit to Dismantle Ships Sanctioned for Iran] (1) Global large ship and marine equipment dismantling buyer GMS announced that it has received the first US permit to purchase transport vessels sanctioned for Iran for dismantling and recycling. (2) GMS CEO Anil Sharma said the permits, issued in April, allow the dismantling of four container ships: Yogi, Timon, Rantanplan, and Bigli. These vessels were all on the US Treasury Department’s sanctions list last July for fleets and networks associated with Hussein Shamkhani. (3) For a long time, shipowners, shipbreaking yards, and ship dealers have lacked a safe and legal channel to dispose of “shadow fleets” (which are often old, poorly maintained, and often uninsured). The continued issuance of such permits could pave the way for more of these vessels to reach the end of their operational life.
