[Iran Clarifies No Tolls, But Security Services Will Be Charged; Straits Reopening Negotiations Continue] ⑴ An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson clarified on Monday that Iran does not intend to charge tolls for passage through the Strait of Hormuz, but will provide a range of security and navigation services for which fees will be charged; therefore, the term "toll" should not be used. ⑵ The spokesperson explained that Iran and Oman's joint development of an agreement or mechanism to ensure the safe passage of ships through the strait is a responsible action in accordance with international law, concerning both countries' interests and national security as littoral states, as well as the common interests of the international community. ⑶ These services include navigational assistance and necessary measures to protect the environment of the Strait of Hormuz, the Persian Gulf, and the Sea of Oman. Tehran and Muscat are negotiating the establishment of this mechanism and hope to reach a final agreement as soon as possible. ⑷ The strait has been blocked by Iran since the outbreak of the war. 20% of the world's oil has passed through this waterway. Last week, Iran allowed 20 to 35 ships to pass daily. The US and Iran are negotiating to end the war and reopen the strait, but on Monday morning, Iran stated that signing an agreement was not imminent.
