The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported that as of May 27, 119 cases of infection had been reported in 36 states across the United States. The confirmed cases were infected with either the Salmonella Typhimurium or Salmonella Newport strains that are currently causing the outbreak. These types of Salmonella infections typically cause symptoms such as fever, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and vomiting. Most infected individuals recover spontaneously within a few days, but children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems may develop severe illness and require immediate medical intervention.
