[EU Satellite Spectrum Allocation Leans Towards Domestic Companies, Limiting US Share] (1) Europe announced a plan on Wednesday to allocate most of its mobile satellite spectrum to European companies while reducing the share of US operators, in order to reduce reliance on tech giants and promote the development of domestic companies. (2) Musk's Starlink and Amazon's low-Earth orbit satellite business are major players in the market, and analysts believe the plan could put these US competitors at a disadvantage. The European Commission stated that one-third of the spectrum will be used for national purposes such as security and military, and will be integrated by an EU operator into the IRIS2 system (the European version of "Starlink"), which consists of 290 satellites. (3) The remaining two-thirds of the spectrum will be allocated equally between EU and non-EU operators for commercial use, which is a compromise (previously, some commissioners wanted to completely exclude US companies). As a transition, the 2GHz band licenses for US Viasat and EchoStar will be extended for another two years after they expire in May 2027.
