[Samsung Electronics Becomes South Korea's Largest Borrowing Group] (1) Yonhap News Agency, citing data from South Korea's financial regulator, reported that by the end of 2025, Samsung Electronics will become South Korea's largest borrowing group. A total of 42 companies have been listed as "main debt corporate groups" subject to assessment of their financial structure by creditor banks, a record high since 2014. The top five borrowers are Samsung, Hyundai Motor, SK Hynix, Lotte, and LG. (2) This marks Samsung's return to the top spot after eight years, following its consecutive tenure from 2016 to 2018. South Korean media analysis suggests that its rise in ranking is closely related to its large-scale investments in AI semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, and global expansion in recent years. (3) Overall, the borrowing scale of large South Korean companies continues to rise. The total borrowing of the 42 "main debt corporate groups" reached 743.9 trillion won, a year-on-year increase of 5%; the total bank credit line was 386.9 trillion won, a year-on-year increase of 4.1%.
