[Former CIA Director Petraeus: Unmanned Systems Will Bring the “Most Terrifying” Danger and the Greatest Growth Opportunity] (1) Former CIA Director Petraeus stated that unmanned systems will pose the greatest danger and also bring structural growth opportunities in the next decade; conflicts in Iran, Ukraine, and other countries have proven that the methods of warfare are rapidly evolving. (2) The proliferation of drones in the Middle East will drive the region to invest heavily in both offensive and defensive capabilities. Current defense measures are far from sufficient; for example, Iran’s cheap “Witness” drones (US$20,000-50,000) often force the US to use more expensive missiles to intercept them. Even a small number of drones have disrupted Qatar’s liquefied natural gas production; in the next year or so, the war will enter the “autonomous systems” confrontation phase, and drone swarms will be almost impossible to defend against. (3) Ukraine has performed well in the production and countermeasures of drones, but currently, single-drone interception is insufficient to deal with swarms. Autonomy means no longer being limited by the number of remote pilots, which will become an “extremely terrifying” development direction. At the same time, the rise of unmanned systems represents huge investment opportunities, and the next moment of change is the deployment of “autonomous systems of autonomous systems” combined with space-based communications (such as Starlink).
