[South Korea to Re-establish Special Investigation Department for Platforms and Chaebols, Restoring Similar Functions After 21 Years] (1) South Korea's antitrust regulator will establish a new investigation department specifically to investigate platform companies and large chaebols, essentially restoring similar functions after the original investigation bureau was abolished 21 years ago. (2) The chairman of the Korea Fair Trade Commission stated that the current system of investigating and punishing different parts of large cases separately may underestimate the overall severity of the problem; in addition, chaebol groups that engage in unfair practices in intergenerational business succession also need stronger oversight. (3) The agency also plans to establish a new 40-person economic and data analysis department to strengthen infrastructure and analytical capabilities.
