U.S. new home sales fell more than expected in April, indicating that various incentives offered by builders at the start of the peak spring sales season have failed to effectively stimulate the enthusiasm of potential homebuyers. According to government data released Thursday, purchases of new single-family homes in the U.S. fell 6.2% in April from March, translating to an annualized rate of approximately 622,000 units. Economists had previously expected an annualized rate of 660,000 units. The setback in April's new home sales suggests that the U.S. housing market has not yet emerged from its three-year slump. Despite builders' efforts to construct affordable homes and offer various incentives, many low-income Americans still find current housing prices too high and unaffordable due to continuously rising mortgage rates.
