[New York Fed Report: More Americans Go Hungry Than During COVID-19 Pandemic Peak] (1) A report released by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York indicates that more Americans are going hungry this year than during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. (2) In February of this year, the bank surveyed approximately 1,200 American household heads to understand whether they were forced to use emergency savings to pay bills, whether they had difficulty purchasing food, whether any of their minor children were going hungry, and whether they relied on food donations or government subsidies to make ends meet. The results showed a significant increase in the proportion of households experiencing the above four difficulties. (3) The food insecurity problem has worsened dramatically, particularly among families with lower levels of education, low incomes, and young children. The New York Fed stated that consumers are "pessimistic about their financial situation and prospects," and current consumer confidence levels are close to or lower than the lows during the Great Depression and the COVID-19 pandemic.
