Iceland to Hold Referendum on EU Accession Negotiations The Icelandic parliament passed a resolution on August 28, approving a referendum on August 29 to decide whether to restart EU accession negotiations. If the Icelandic people vote in favor of restarting negotiations, the Icelandic government will inform the EU of its decision, and formal negotiations can resume. However, any final accession agreement will still require a separate referendum by the Icelandic people. Iceland applied to join the EU in 2009, suspended and subsequently halted accession negotiations in 2013. Icelandic parliamentary documents show that the European Commission believes Iceland's application has not been formally withdrawn. (Xinhua)
