[Global Air Passenger Demand Down 3.4% Year-on-Year in April Due to Middle East Conflict] ⑴ The International Air Transport Association (IATA) today released its regular data on global air passenger demand for April 2026, showing a 3.4% year-on-year decrease in total air passenger demand (measured in revenue passenger kilometers). Excluding the Middle East, demand increased by 1.2%. ⑵ Total capacity (measured in available seat kilometers) decreased by 2.9% year-on-year. The load factor in April was 83.1%, a decrease of 0.4 percentage points compared to April 2025. ⑶ The IATA Director General stated, “Impacted by regional conflicts, demand from Middle Eastern airlines plummeted by 46.6%, dragging down overall demand by 3.4%. The air transport situation remains highly volatile.” ⑷ “Jet fuel prices more than doubled in April, driving up airfares. Forward scheduling data indicates that capacity supply will shrink in the coming months, suggesting that airlines are balancing high fuel costs with weak demand.”
