[Italy's Inflation Rises to 3.2% in May, a More Than Two-Year High] ⑴ Italy's overall inflation rate rose to 3.2% in May from 2.7% in the previous month, in line with market expectations and the highest level since September 2023. ⑵ This increase is consistent with the trend in other major Eurozone economies, as tight oil and gas supplies following the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East have pushed up price increases in energy-importing countries. ⑶ Both unregulated energy prices (rising from 9.6% to 12.6%) and regulated energy prices (rising from 5.3% to 5.8%) accelerated. Similarly, inflation rates for transport services and leisure and cultural services were also higher. ⑷ Core inflation, excluding food and energy prices, rose to 1.8% from 1.6% in the previous month. ⑸ On a month-on-month basis, Italy's consumer price index rose by 0.4%, a slowdown from the 1.1% increase in April.
