[Brazil's April primary budget surplus exceeded expectations, but the overall deficit widened, and public debt rose to 80.4% of GDP] ⑴ Data released by the Central Bank of Brazil on Friday showed that the primary budget surplus in April was 24.624 billion reais, higher than the 22 billion reais expected in an institutional survey. However, the overall budget deficit was 60.139 billion reais, worse than the expected 50.709 billion reais. ⑵ In the 12 months ending in April, Brazil's primary budget deficit was equivalent to 0.97% of GDP. The total public sector debt as a percentage of GDP in April was 80.4%, slightly higher than the expected 80.3%. ⑶ The net public sector debt as a percentage of GDP in April was 67.4%, higher than the expected 66.9%.
