[A Quarter of Large Oil Tankers Affected by the Iranian Conflict Have Successfully Sailed Out of the Strait] Of the large non-Iranian oil tankers stranded in the Persian Gulf at the outset of the Iranian conflict, approximately one-quarter have gradually escaped and successfully left the area through slow and covert means. According to shipping data compiled by media outlets, after the conflict erupted on February 28th and the Strait of Hormuz was effectively closed, a total of 109 large vessels (those with a carrying capacity of 700,000 barrels or more) were stranded; of these, 29 have now successfully traversed this strategic chokepoint. Although these outflowing cargoes represent only a tiny fraction of the total crude oil and refined petroleum products still stranded in the Gulf, they were quickly snapped up by the market as global market inventory buffers dwindled at a record rate. Furthermore, given that many vessels turned off their location broadcasting equipment to mitigate risk, the actual number of vessels that successfully evacuated is likely higher than the aforementioned figures.
