The Trump administration has introduced new regulations prohibiting foreign entities from acquiring Anthropic's top-performing artificial intelligence models. This move signifies a further escalation of US regulations, classifying cutting-edge AI systems as core national security assets. Anthropic has been added to the US Department of Defense's blacklist, with the US assessment deeming its models too risky for even the US government to use. Simultaneously, the models have been placed under the Commerce Department's licensing system, strictly prohibiting their use by foreign entities. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick sent a letter to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei on Friday, explicitly imposing export controls on the Mythos 5 and Fable 5 models, prohibiting their export outside the US and their use by foreign nationals within the US. A government official revealed to the media that other companies had previously announced successful cracking of the Mythos model, raising concerns about potential national security risks and prompting the Commerce Department to implement the aforementioned control measures. The official also stated that the US had previously requested Anthropic to suspend the release of its latest models, but this request was not fulfilled, leading to the final export control order. The U.S. stated that these models must be strictly controlled until the U.S. national security system is upgraded and strengthened, and related work is expected to be implemented gradually in the coming weeks. As of now, Anthropic has not responded to this matter.
