【Hyundai Motor Workers Launch Three-Day Partial Strike Demanding Higher Bonuses and Job Security in the AI Era】 (1) Hyundai Motor workers in South Korea began a three-day partial strike on Monday, with production workers leaving their posts two hours before the end of their shifts. The strike will continue until Wednesday. The union is demanding that the company increase bonuses and seek to ensure that jobs are not lost due to artificial intelligence and robots. (2) A core focus of this year's negotiations is a long-term demand—linking performance bonuses to 30% of the previous year's consolidated net profit. This demand was previously considered a bargaining chip and was not taken seriously, but it is gaining more support as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix recently paid huge bonuses to chip workers. (3) Regarding job security, Hyundai plans to deploy the Atlas humanoid robot in its U.S. factories in 2028 for high-volume, repetitive tasks. The union is demanding that management secure employee income through formal negotiations and implement a full monthly salary system before deploying any Atlas robots. (4) The union is also demanding that fixed bonuses be increased from 750% to 800% of monthly salary and that basic wages be increased by 149,600 won (about US$100). (5) According to Yonhap News Agency, the work stoppage may cause losses of more than 18.7 billion won per hour.
