[LNG Transport Through the Strait of Hormuz Disrupted Again, Blocking Export Routes for Qatar and the UAE] ⑴ Kpler data shows that no LNG carriers have passed through the Strait of Hormuz since July 11. The Iranian attack on merchant ships has drastically escalated security risks around this strategic waterway, bringing maritime transport to a standstill. ⑵ This disruption has far-reaching consequences, as the Strait of Hormuz is Qatar's only maritime export route for LNG to markets outside the Middle East Gulf, and it is also a crucial transport route for the UAE's LNG exports. The closure directly blocks the export capacity of these two major suppliers. ⑶ Following the signing of the interim peace agreement between the US and Iran, LNG transport saw a phased recovery in June, with 40 LNG ships passing through the strait that month, a significant increase from 8 in May and 4 in April. March had seen an extreme situation of zero passage. ⑷ The current disruption signifies a sharp increase in uncertainty regarding global LNG supply, particularly given the high dependence of European and Asian markets on Middle Eastern sources. Close monitoring of geopolitical developments and the feasibility of alternative routes is necessary.
