Chicago Federal Reserve President Austan Goolsby noted that Tuesday's Consumer Price Index report was "surprisingly moderate," but policymakers need more than just monthly statistics to assess whether inflation is steadily declining toward the central bank's 2% target. Speaking at an event in Kenosha, Wisconsin on Tuesday, Goolsby mentioned that service sector inflation had previously been "too high," but the latest data released on Tuesday was "very encouraging." He stated, "I would be more reassured if we could see this positive trend for several months in a row. The sooner we can confirm that inflation is gradually falling back to the 2% target, the sooner we can move policy back to normal."
