[US 30-Year Fixed Mortgage Rates Rise, Mortgage Applications Continue to Decline] ⑴ Data from the Mortgage Bankers Association shows that as of the week ending September 11, the average contracted interest rate for 30-year fixed mortgages in the US rose to 6.94%, a new high since May 2025. ⑵ Driven by renewed tensions in the Middle East and stronger-than-expected inflation data, the 10-year US Treasury yield briefly approached the 5% mark, reinforcing market expectations of a Fed rate hike on September 16; since the escalation of regional conflicts at the end of February, US mortgage rates have risen by nearly 90 basis points. ⑶ Overall mortgage applications fell 4.0% week-on-week, continuing the downward trend of the previous week, marking the largest weekly drop since July; refinancing applications fell sharply by 8.5%, while home purchase loan applications decreased slightly by 0.7%. ⑷ Mortgage rates, following the continued rise in US Treasury yields, further suppressed credit demand in the US housing market.
