[UK 10-Year gilt yield rebounds to 5.25%] ⑴ The yield on UK 10-year gilts rose to 5.25% on Friday, after falling more than 10 basis points in the previous session, as investors priced in stronger-than-expected retail sales and the Bank of England's decision this week. ⑵ UK retail sales rose 0.5% in August, defying expectations of a 0.2% decline and rebounding from a drop in July. Department stores led the recovery as retailers addressed inventory supply issues, indicating that consumer spending remains resilient despite high energy prices and potential monetary policy tightening. ⑶ The Bank of England kept interest rates unchanged on Thursday and said it would stop selling ultra-long-term gilts under its quantitative easing program, while warning that ongoing Middle East conflict could prompt policy tightening. ⑷ The Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan also raised interest rates this week and hinted at further tightening this year. ⑸ Elsewhere, Brent crude continued to fall as concerns about Saudi supply disruptions eased.
