Statistics from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) show that in the week ending September 15, speculative funds significantly reduced their net short positions in U.S. 5-year Treasury futures traded on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) by 270,127 contracts, bringing the adjusted net short position to 997,366 contracts. Such changes in positioning typically reflect a marginal shift in market expectations regarding the short-term price movement of U.S. medium-term Treasury bonds. Reducing net short positions often indicates that speculative funds' concerns about a further decline in 5-year Treasury prices have eased, or that some funds are beginning to position themselves to bet on a rebound in Treasury prices.
