On September 18, the White House released a statement announcing that President Trump had announced a policy that would include Medicaid programs in all 50 states under the Most Favored Nation (MFN) prescription drug pricing system. Pharmaceutical manufacturers would be required to guarantee, through rebates, that the final drug prices paid by Medicaid would not exceed the minimum pricing levels in other developed countries. This pricing model covers hundreds of branded drugs, involving major drug categories such as oncology, diabetes, and asthma. Currently, Medicaid has already received 1 million free prescriptions for the heart medication Eliquis through this policy. The White House Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) estimates that this policy is expected to reduce Medicaid drug spending by $64.3 billion over the next ten years, with the federal government saving $36.6 billion and state governments saving $27.6 billion. The committee also predicts that the overall savings in pharmaceutical spending from the MFN pricing agreement over the next ten years will reach $600 billion.
