Hedge funds have turned bullish on the yen for the first time since mid-2025. This shift in market sentiment is particularly noteworthy following weeks of intervention by US and Japanese authorities to support the yen in the foreign exchange market. According to data released by the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) on Friday, leveraged traders closed all their short yen positions and began establishing long yen positions in the week ending September 15. Bloomberg data shows that these funds currently hold approximately 251 billion yen (US$1.6 billion) in bullish yen-related positions. This shift in bullish stance comes just before the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan announced interest rate hikes this week. Previously, some market participants had expected the Bank of Japan to release clearer signals of further rate hikes, but Japanese policymakers did not meet these expectations, catching many traders off guard with these bullish positions.
