Data released by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) shows that in the week ending October 27, equity fund managers increased their net long positions in the S&P 500 index listed on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) by 23,050 contracts, bringing the total to 917,513 contracts. During the same period, net short positions in the S&P 500 also rose by 24,072 contracts, increasing to a total of 372,747 contracts. This change in positioning reflects adjustments in market positioning regarding both long and short positions in the S&P 500 index that week. The similar scale of increases in long and short positions indicates a divergence of opinion in the market regarding the index's future direction.
