[Canada Pushes for Vancouver Port Expansion to Reduce Dependence on US Exports] ⑴ On October 30, the Canadian federal government announced that it had officially designated the Roberts Beach Pier 2 project at the Port of Vancouver as a national interest project, aiming to increase port capacity, promote trade diversification, and reduce reliance on exports to the US. ⑵ According to a press release issued by Transport Canada that day, the project plans to strengthen trade infrastructure and promote the goal of doubling exports to non-US markets by 2035. ⑶ The project plans to invest CAD 5.9 billion (approximately USD 4.2 billion), increasing the Port of Vancouver's container throughput capacity by about 50%, adding 2.4 million containers of handling capacity annually, and supporting up to CAD 100 billion in trade annually. ⑷ Transport Canada stated that designating it as a national interest project will provide certainty for subsequent regulatory approvals, thereby bringing forward the project's commercial operation timeline to 2035, shortening the original plan by up to four years.
