[Fuel Costs Soar, Electricity Prices in Tokyo and Central Japan Hit Multi-Year Highs] 1. High fuel costs have caused a sharp rise in Japan's spot electricity prices over the weekend, with prices in major electricity-consuming areas like Tokyo and central Japan reaching multi-year highs. Data from the Japan Electricity Exchange shows that on Sunday, the following day's spot electricity prices in Tokyo and central Japan rose by 1.1% and 7.2% respectively, reaching 36.11 yen (approximately US$0.2) and 36.29 yen per kilowatt-hour, the highest since September 2022. 2. During the same period, the national average electricity price in Japan fell by 8.7% to 30.09 yen per kilowatt-hour. 3. Traders revealed that spot liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices continued to rise on Friday, reaching approximately US$34 per million British thermal units (MMBtu), more than three times the pre-war level. The Strait of Hormuz, a key global export waterway, still sees less than one-third of its LNG transport volume compared to before the conflict.
