[Indonesia’s trade surplus narrowed slightly to US$3.36 billion in September as imports grew faster than exports] (1) Indonesia’s trade surplus narrowed slightly in September as imports grew faster than exports. Statistics agency said Monday that Southeast Asia’s largest economy recorded a trade surplus of US$3.36 billion, down from US$3.55 billion in August; the cumulative trade surplus from January to September was US$10.61 billion, during which surpluses were recorded with the United States, India and the Philippines. (2) RHB economist Wong Xian Yong said in a report that Indonesia’s trade surplus is expected to remain moderate until the end of 2027 as imports may grow faster than exports; exports are expected to grow at an average of about 4% in 2026, supported by shipments of processed metals and finished goods, while strong domestic investment and energy demand may keep imports high, limiting the trade surplus from expanding significantly. (3) Exports account for about 20% of Indonesia’s GDP. In September, exports increased by 11.87% year-on-year to US$27.59 billion, due to stronger shipments of non-natural gas products, particularly increased exports of vegetable and animal oils, copper and related products, and machinery and equipment; imports increased by 18.41% year-on-year to US$24.23 billion, due to increased imports of non-natural gas products. (4) From January to September, Indonesia's exports increased by 5.58% to US$221.23 billion, and imports increased by 19.67% to US$210.63 billion.
