[Trump Says Incumbent President's Party Is Hard to Win Midterm Elections] The US midterm elections officially begin today (November 3rd). Regarding this "midterm exam" for his administration, US President Trump, in his final campaign speech in Washington on the afternoon of November 2nd, stated, "The incumbent president's party usually loses in midterm elections, but this time we've fought hard." He urged voters who voted for him in the last general election to cast their ballots, claiming that if even a small percentage of them turn out, the Republican Party could win by a landslide. The US midterm elections don't elect the president, but rather all members of the House of Representatives, one-third of the senators, and a large number of governors and state legislators, among other local officials. The president's party often seems to succumb to the "midterm election curse." Statistics show that since World War II, from the Truman administration in 1946 to the Biden administration in 2022, there have been 20 midterm elections, and the incumbent president's party lost 18 times—meaning they lost seats. Only the incumbent presidents of 1998 and 2002, George W. Bush, achieved midterm election results that became the only two instances in postwar American political history where the president's party won the midterm elections (or at least did not lose seats).
