[Swiss inflation rises to near three-year high in October, with energy prices being the main driver] (1) Driven by a sharp rise in oil prices and a weakening Swiss franc, Switzerland's inflation rate has risen to its highest level in nearly three years. (2) The Swiss National Statistics Office announced on Tuesday that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 1.5% year-on-year in October, up from 1% in September and also higher than economists' expectations. (3) Although this figure is still within the Swiss National Bank's inflation target range of 0% to 2%, it is significantly higher than policymakers' forecast of 1.2% for the fourth quarter; officials believe that this round of inflation acceleration is mainly temporary and said that medium-term inflationary pressures have only increased slightly. (4) The Swiss National Bank's borrowing costs have remained at the lowest level in the world for more than a year, i.e., zero interest rates; partly because the cost shock caused by the war in Iran has had a relatively mild impact on Switzerland. (5) Although gasoline prices have risen, energy accounts for a small proportion of Switzerland's inflation basket, so its driving effect on overall inflation indicators is limited; the Swiss National Statistics Office said that the rise in heating oil, gasoline and diesel prices in October was the main factor driving inflation. (6) The core inflation rate, excluding items with large fluctuations such as energy, remained unchanged at 0.5%.
