[Spain to Provide €30 Million in Aid to Victims of High-Speed Train Accident] Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente announced on October 3 that the government will provide €30 million in aid to the victims and their families of the high-speed train accident that occurred on October 28 in the Castile-La Mancha region, and will take measures to strengthen railway safety. Puente also announced that, in response to the accident, the government will double the amount of compulsory passenger insurance compensation and make advance payments. Puente said the government will take a series of measures to strengthen the operation and management of high-speed railways, including reducing the number of high-speed trains between Madrid and Seville until a new safety system is in place. A cross-validation system will be introduced into railway dispatching management, so that in cases of route congestion and the absence of automatic control systems, every decision made by the control center will be monitored and verified by another dispatcher. Puente said the Spanish National Railway Infrastructure Authority will improve the working conditions of dispatchers, increase the number of staff in the control center, and install new software in the control center so that dispatchers can better understand the location of trains and track conditions.
