[Japan's JIC plans to sell JSR to Mitsui Chemicals for over 1.3 trillion yen] (1) Two sources familiar with the matter revealed that Japan's government-backed Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (JIC) plans to sell semiconductor materials manufacturer JSR to Mitsui Chemicals for over 1.3 trillion yen (approximately US$8.2 billion). (2) One of the sources said a decision could be made as early as this month; both sources declined to be named as the information has not yet been made public. (3) Two years ago, JIC acquired JSR for approximately 900 billion yen and stated its intention to use the company to promote consolidation in the semiconductor materials industry; with the surge in investment in artificial intelligence (AI) driving up valuations of chip-related companies, the fund will instead sell JSR to a Japanese chemical giant. (4) Founded in 1957, JSR is a leading global manufacturer of photoresist, which is used to transfer circuit patterns onto semiconductor wafers; Mitsui Chemicals, which is also expanding its chip materials business, currently has a market capitalization of approximately 800 billion yen. (5) This deal could be one of the largest in the Japanese chemical industry, exceeding the size of Showa Denko’s acquisition of Hitachi Chemical in 2020 (which led to the formation of Resonac Holdings).
