[Germany's metal and electrical industries may lose another 300,000 jobs, bringing the total to 350,000 in seven years] (1) Oliver Zander, chairman of the German Association of Employers in the Metal and Electrical Industries (Gesamtmetall), said that the German metal, electrical and automotive industries may lose about 300,000 jobs in the next two to three years; in the past seven years, these sectors have lost 350,000 jobs. (2) Zander said that the German economy loses about 42 billion euros annually due to the industry downturn; if the industry continues to decline, it may lose an additional 35 billion euros annually. He told Bild that given the underutilization of capacity, the metal and electrical industries alone may face the risk of losing another 300,000 jobs in the next two to three years. (3) Zander pointed out that there are currently about 3.7 million employees in German metal industry companies. If the number of jobs continues to decrease, it may drop to 3.4 million, the lowest level since German reunification in 1990; the main reasons for the industry crisis include competition from Chinese manufacturers, Germany's high labor and energy costs, bureaucratic barriers and US import tariffs.
