[Hungary Plans to Eliminate Russian Gas Imports by Autumn 2027 and Seeks Oil Alternatives] (1) Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán confirmed that Hungary will abandon its imports of natural gas from Russia by autumn 2027 and is looking for ways to reduce its dependence on Russian oil. Hungarian Minister of Economy and Energy István Kapitan said in September that Budapest was prepared to meet Brussels' demand to abandon Russian gas from October 2027 and that alternative gas sources had been found. (2) In an interview with Telex, Orbán said that the EU has set a clear deadline of autumn 2027 for the gradual elimination of Russian gas. She pointed out that Hungary is considering alternatives to importing natural gas from Azerbaijan, as well as obtaining gas sources through liquefied natural gas receiving terminals in Greece, Lithuania and Poland. (3) Orbán added that Hungary is currently planning alternatives to importing oil through the JANAF pipeline operated by Croatian operator; Hungarian energy company MOL is creating conditions for the technical upgrade of its refineries so that it can purchase non-Russian oil through JANAF.
