[US Trade Deficit Slightly Decreased in September, But Remains High Overall] ⑴ The US trade deficit in goods and services fell to $104.6 billion in September, a slight decrease of 0.7% month-on-month. Although it has fallen from the record high in August, it remains the second highest level since the new round of tariffs took effect. ⑵ Total imports rose 1.2% month-on-month to $425.8 billion, a record high. Large-scale purchases of AI chips and computer equipment by companies for new data centers boosted capital goods imports. ⑶ Exports increased 1.9% month-on-month to $320.9 billion, driven by higher shipments of computers, crude oil, and aircraft. Meanwhile, advance purchases of soybeans by Chinese companies boosted agricultural exports. ⑷ The persistently high trade deficit is directly related to robust domestic consumption and government spending. The tariffs only apply to daily necessities such as furniture and toys, while large-value imported goods such as chips and pharmaceuticals are mostly exempted, weakening the effect of reducing the deficit.
