[Another Tanker Catches Fire in the Strait of Hormuz, Escalating Dispute Over Passage Safety] ⑴ The Iranian Navy stated that another oil tanker struck a mine and caught fire east of the Strait of Hormuz in the early hours of November 5th, hours after the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy reported two other oil tankers catching fire in separate incidents. ⑵ According to the military-affiliated Defapress news agency on the 5th, the Iranian Navy stated that the tanker was transiting the strait along what Tehran calls an "unauthorized" and "unsafe" southern route. ⑶ The statement said that the vessel, "like other oil tankers that have recently struck mines," shut down its identification and navigation systems, and reiterated Iran's warning that the strait is "unsafe and closed to non-compliant vessels attempting to pass without prior coordination." ⑷ These reports come as maritime security tensions escalate, with Iran and the United States disagreeing on the rights and safe passage through this strategic waterway.
