[Nationwide Strike and Protests in France Spark Clashes] On November 5, a nationwide strike by some public sector workers in France sparked protests and demonstrations. While the demonstrations were reportedly generally peaceful, clashes between police and protesters of varying degrees broke out again in Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Nantes, Toulouse, Strasbourg, and other cities. According to the French Ministry of the Interior, 53 police officers have been injured and 448 people have been arrested so far. The strike also led to a decrease in French nuclear power output on the morning of November 5, and the closure of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The French Ministry of the Interior stated that approximately 575,000 people participated in the nationwide demonstrations and rallies. The General Confederation of Labour (CGT), one of the organizers, claimed to have mobilized as many as 1.6 million people nationwide, including 350,000 in Paris. Approximately 70,000 police officers and gendarmes were on duty across France, a scale comparable to previous weekends. (Xinhua)
