The Baltic Dry Index, which measures freight rates for dry bulk carriers, fell slightly on Friday, marking its worst monthly performance since April.
The main index tracking freight rates for Capesize, Panamax, and Supramax vessels fell 5 points, or 0.25%, to 1966. The index has fallen approximately 7.9% this month. The last monthly decline was in April, when it fell 13.3%.
The Capesize index fell 16 points, or 0.5%, to 2,929, marking its biggest monthly drop in six months.
Average daily earnings for Capesize vessels carrying 150,000 tons of cargo, such as iron ore and coal, fell by $140 to $24,288.
Iron ore futures prices fell on Friday due to shrinking demand and rising inventories, but market expectations of a trade agreement between the world's two largest economies supported prices, putting them on track for weekly and monthly gains.
The Panamax index fell 28 points, or 1.5%, to 1,821. However, the index rose 2.5% in October.
The average daily earnings of Panamax vessels (typically carrying 60,000-70,000 tons of coal or grain) fell by $254 to $16,389.
Among smaller vessels, the Very Large Vessel Index fell 10 points, or 0.8%, to 1,326.
