A ceasefire in Gaza has been reached, but a "political bomb" remains unexploded! Netanyahu reveals significant risks.

2025-12-08 11:03:08

The ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip has been largely maintained, and Israeli troops have withdrawn from the area to the so-called "yellow line."

Despite this, sporadic clashes continue between the Israel Defense Forces and Gaza militants, while the Israeli military continues to launch deadly airstrikes.

The body of a deceased hostage is believed to remain in the Gaza Strip. Israeli authorities have been releasing the bodies of Palestinian prisoners and deceased Palestinian detainees in exchange for the return of the hostage's remains.

Netanyahu reiterated his opposition to Palestinian statehood.

Last Sunday (December 7), Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Jerusalem that Israel cannot accept the existence of a Palestinian state.

He emphasized that Israel will maintain comprehensive security control from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea and reject any arrangements that could threaten the survival of the Palestinian state.

Netanyahu stated, "The goal of Palestinian statehood is to destroy the only Jewish state. They already have a de facto state in Gaza, yet they use it to try to eliminate the only Jewish state."

While he believes broader peace with Arab countries remains possible, Netanyahu also emphasized that Israel will never agree to the establishment of a state "dedicated to the destruction of Israel" on its doorstep. He also warned of a rise in global anti-Semitism and argued that Israel's military action is a legitimate response to an existential threat posed by Iran and its proxies.

Netanyahu emphasized the historic shift in Israel's relationship with Germany, pointing out that 80 years after the victory in the World War II, it is now Israel that is helping to defend Germany—a shift he called historic.

When asked by reporters whether he would leave politics in exchange for a pardon, Netanyahu responded in Hebrew: "No, no."

Regarding the second phase of the peace plan, he emphasized that Hamas must disarm and stated that the second phase of the peace plan is "coming soon."

When Netanyahu mentioned his planned visit to the White House at the end of the month to meet with President Trump, he said, "We will have very important talks at the end of the month to discuss how to ensure that the second phase of goals is achieved."

The United States and its allies are preparing to announce the second phase of the Gaza peace plan's transition scheme in the coming weeks.

According to a U.S. official, the United States is preparing to announce the second phase of the transition to the 20-point peace plan in Gaza in the coming weeks. This move comes as the U.S. and its allies attempt to maintain the fragile ceasefire agreement reached between Hamas and Israel in October.

The statement will include the establishment of a new governance structure led by a peace committee to manage the Gaza Strip, as well as the formation of an international stabilization force to assist in the region's security.

US President Trump is expected to release a list of the parties and countries involved in these mechanisms soon.

The 20-point Gaza peace plan was strengthened after it received authorization from the UN Security Council in November, when member states voted to approve a resolution supporting the plan.

According to the resolution, international security forces will cooperate with Israel and Egypt, and together with a newly trained and vetted Palestinian police force, to safeguard border areas and ensure the permanent disarmament process for non-state armed groups, including Hamas.

Walz told the Security Council that international security forces would be responsible for "ensuring security in the region, supporting the demilitarization of Gaza, dismantling terrorist infrastructure, seizing weapons, and ensuring the safety of Palestinian civilians."

The UN Security Council approved the establishment of a transitional governing body called the "Peace Commission," which will oversee the operations of the non-political Palestinian Governing Council, composed of technocrats, and will be responsible for reconstruction efforts in the Gaza Strip and the distribution of humanitarian aid. According to the resolution, funding for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip after the two-year war will come from a trust fund supported by the World Bank.

The current situation in the Gaza Strip (a fragile ceasefire, progress on the peace plan, but the core conflict remains) presents a complex picture of "short-term easing" and "long-term support" for gold prices, with the impact of short-term easing sentiment likely being more direct. Spot gold rose moderately on Monday, by approximately 0.31%.
