[Department of Homeland Security Shuts Down Due to Funding Impasse, Key Positions Remain Operational] The U.S. Department of Homeland Security began a shutdown this Saturday due to a congressional funding impasse with no prospect of a short-term solution. The impasse was triggered by strong public opposition to the Trump administration's large-scale immigration enforcement actions, coupled with Congress being in recess and failing to reach an agreement on Democratic demands for new restrictions on immigration enforcement methods. The initial impact of the shutdown is expected to be limited, but will expand over time. Unlike the historic 43-day shutdown at the end of last year, funding for most other departments has been maintained until September 30th. Furthermore, since over 90% of Department of Homeland Security employees are considered key personnel, they will continue working during the shutdown. Therefore, core functions such as immigration raids, citizenship approvals, airport security, cybersecurity, and Coast Guard operations will continue as normal.
