[Vitol Leads $3 Billion South African LNG Power Plant Project, Receives Strategic Government Support] ⑴ Global commodities trader Vitol confirmed it is leading a consortium to invest $3 billion in a gas-fired power plant and associated LNG import facilities in Durban, on South Africa's east coast. The consortium includes Saudi Arabia's ACWA Power, Vitol's Vivo Energy, and its terminal operator VTTI. ⑵ South Africa sees natural gas as key to phasing out coal-fired power, aiming to add 16 gigawatts of natural gas-fired power generation capacity by 2039. The project plans to build a 1,000-1,800 MW combined cycle gas turbine power plant and related LNG import facilities. ⑶ The project received strategic integrated project status from the South African government last September, which will expedite its progress by reducing bureaucratic hurdles such as licensing procedures. Vitol stated that 20 hectares of land have been reserved for the project, but a specific timeline cannot yet be provided. Sources familiar with the matter said that in addition to power generation, the project plans to distribute regasified LNG via pipelines and trucks, and provide LNG bunkering services for shipping.
