[SEC Chairman Pushes for Updates to Disclosure Rules, Plans to Simplify Risk Disclosure List] Paul Atkins, Chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), is exploring ways to narrow the scope of risk factor disclosures. He suggests that reducing the amount of disclosure requires some "innovative thinking." In prepared remarks for a Texas A&M University law school event on Tuesday, Atkins stated, "If companies aren't forced to list almost every foreseeable contingency to avoid subsequent litigation, they can focus their efforts on core risks more relevant to their business." Atkins has repeatedly argued that corporate disclosure rules need to evolve. Last week, he also revealed to lawmakers that publicly traded companies in the U.S. spend as much as $2.7 billion annually on preparing and submitting annual reports.
