[Toxic Gas Leak at Nigerian Mine Kills 37] On February 18, local time, police in Plateau State, Nigeria, confirmed that a toxic gas leak at a mine in Zulak community, Wasai local government district, had killed 37 people and left 26 hospitalized. The Nigerian Ministry of Solid Minerals Development issued a statement that day, ordering a halt to all mining activities at the site. The statement said preliminary investigations indicated the mine was an abandoned lead mine where stored minerals were prone to releasing sulfur oxides. (CCTV)
