[US Farmers Expand Soybean Planting Area, Hoping for Recovery in Chinese Demand] US farmers plan to increase soybean planting area this spring while reducing corn planting, the most widely planted crop. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) stated in its first crop outlook report of the year that the planned soybean planting area this year is 85 million acres, up from 81.2 million acres last year. The USDA stated that the upward revision of the expected soybean planting area this spring is mainly due to the more significant profitability advantage of soybeans compared to other crops, and the usual crop rotation in the Corn Belt and Delta regions. Meanwhile, corn planting area will decrease from 98.8 million acres last year to 94 million acres; wheat planting area will be slightly reduced from 45.3 million acres to 45 million acres. Overall, the total planted area of the three major grains will decrease by 1%, but farmers' selling prices are expected to rise slightly.
