Data released by the U.S. Department of Commerce on the 19th showed that the U.S. goods trade deficit will reach a record $1.2409 trillion in 2025, an increase of $25.5 billion or 2.1% from the previous year. The Trump administration had previously used the excuse that tariffs would help reduce the trade deficit to impose tariffs on trading partners. However, Eugenio Alleman, chief economist of investment strategy at Raymond J. P.A. Financial Group, said that the trade deficit in 2025 shows that tariffs have little impact on the overall deficit level, and that monthly trade flows are distorted as U.S. companies adapt to tariff changes.
