[US Official Signals to Iran That Trump Is Serious] According to an Associated Press report on February 19th, a US official, in a private conversation with Iranian officials through diplomatic channels, emphasized that President Trump's remarks about "military strikes if Iran does not make sufficient concessions" were "serious and earnest." The official also stated that he had advised the Trump administration that if the US focused its negotiations on the nuclear issue in the near future, and temporarily suspended its demands regarding "limiting Iran's ballistic missile program" and "Iran ceasing its support for regional proxy forces," it might be able to secure some concessions from Iran in the short term. However, he also warned that if Trump ordered a limited military strike aimed at exerting pressure, it could backfire and cause Iran to withdraw from the negotiation process.
