[Yoon Suk-youl Says He Cannot Accept Life Imprisonment] Former South Korean President Yoon Suk-youl, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in the first instance for instigating the civil unrest, issued a statement through his lawyer today (February 20) stating that he cannot accept the verdict. Yoon's legal team released a statement after meeting with him. In the statement, Yoon said, "My judgment and decision to declare martial law was entirely for the sake of the country and the people—this sincere purpose has not changed to this day." He also said, "Due to my shortcomings, many citizens have experienced setbacks and suffering, for which I offer my deepest apologies to the people." He then stated that he could not accept the verdict, saying, "Given the difficulty in guaranteeing judicial independence and the lack of expectation of a judgment based on law and conscience," he deeply doubts "what is the point of continuing the legal struggle through appeals."
