[Potential US Tariff Ruling Expected to Shake Markets] Stephen Coltman of 21shares writes that a potential Supreme Court ruling on tariffs and developments in Iran could overshadow this morning's growth and inflation data. Fourth-quarter GDP growth was lower than expected, while the December Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index (PCE)—delayed due to last year's government shutdown—remained above the Federal Reserve's 2% target. Coltman says these figures are "quite lagging and inconsistent with recent trends in data including employment, the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) survey, and the CPI." Coltman says an unfavorable tariff ruling "could hurt US Treasuries and the dollar, while benefiting stocks and cryptocurrencies." US Treasury yields have fluctuated repeatedly in response to data and are currently near yesterday's levels.
