[US Consumer Confidence Rises Less Than Expected in February, Short-Term Inflation Expectations Fall Sharply] US consumer confidence rebounded less than expected in February, with optimism among high-income earners offset by a decline in confidence among those who did not benefit from the stock market rally. Final data released by the University of Michigan on Friday showed that the consumer confidence index rose slightly to 56.6 in February, up from 56.4 in January. The survey period was from January 20 to February 16. The median forecast from economists surveyed by Bloomberg was 57.3. The data showed that consumers expect inflation to rise by 3.4% over the next year, down from 4% in January and a one-year low; their inflation expectations for the next 5-10 years are 3.3%. Joanne Hsu, the survey's director, said in a statement, "Affluent and high-income consumers feel better positioned to withstand potential economic risks due to stronger income prospects and portfolio conditions."
