[Trump Orders Temporary 10% Global Tariff to Replace Some Measures Overturned by the US Supreme Court] US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he will impose a 10% global tariff for 150 days to replace some emergency tariff measures that were overturned by the US Supreme Court. He will issue the order under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974. These tariffs will be added on top of existing tariffs. This section allows the president to impose tariffs of up to 15% on any and all countries for a maximum period of 150 days for "significant and serious" balance of payments issues, without requiring prior investigation or other procedural restrictions. The US Supreme Court had earlier ruled on Trump's global tariffs. The policy infringes on Congress's power and violates the "major issue" principle. Trump stated, "We have alternatives, very good alternatives," and when discussing alternative tools, he said, "There may be more money, more money will be collected, and that will make us stronger." He also stated that his administration would launch multiple Section 301 unfair trade practice investigations "to protect our country from unfair trade practices by other countries and companies." It was widely expected that Trump would invoke other regulations (including Section 122) while launching new Section 301 investigations, but the 10% tariffs announced on Friday will only last for 150 days, while Section 301 investigations typically take months to complete.
