Amazon's security research reveals that over the past five weeks, a small group of hackers (possibly even a single person) used readily available AI tools and commercially available generative AI services to rapidly breach weak security measures such as simple login passwords and single-factor authentication, compromising over 600 firewalls in dozens of countries. Such large-scale breaches would normally require a more specialized and larger team. After gaining control of security devices in 55 countries, these hackers further infiltrated some victim networks, with indications of an intent to deploy ransomware attacks. Amazon states that this series of large-scale intrusions, driven by profit, is the latest example of hackers using AI to simplify and accelerate cyberattacks.
